About Torys LLP

Torys LLP traces its history to J.S.D. Tory and Associates, a corporate law practice John Stewart Donald Tory started in Toronto in 1941, after training at Osgoode Hall and earning a doctorate in law at Harvard. Tory's twin sons, John A. Tory and James M. Tory, joined the firm along with two law school classmates in 1954, and it was renamed Tory Tory DesLauriers & Binnington. The firm built a litigation practice through the 1960s and 70s, including a 1972 merger with the litigation firm Kimber, Dubin, led by Charles L. Dubin, who later became Chief Justice of Ontario. In 2000, the firm merged with a New York corporate firm whose predecessor dated to 1948, and it took its current name, Torys LLP.

Founder John S.D. Tory graduated at the top of the class at Osgoode Hall and earned a doctorate in law from Harvard University before starting a corporate practice in Toronto in 1941.

The neighbourhood

Torys' Toronto office is in the TD South Tower at 79 Wellington Street West, one of the buildings that make up the Toronto-Dominion Centre in the city's financial district. The complex also includes the original TD Centre towers that architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed together with the Canadian firms John B. Parkin Associates and Bregman and Hamann between 1967 and 1969, a complex the Ontario Heritage Trust credits with reshaping Toronto's skyline and setting a template for the glass and steel office towers that followed across the country.
