Directory Terms of Use
Last updated: October 4, 2026 | Governing law: Ontario, Canada
These terms cover the LawOnline.ca Canadian Legal Directory at directory.lawonline.ca (the “Directory”). They sit alongside the LawOnline.ca Terms of Service, which cover LawOnline.ca as a whole. Where the two differ about the Directory, these terms apply. By using the Directory, you agree to them.
What the Directory is
The Directory is a free, public list of Canadian law firms and lawyers. Its listings are compiled and written with the help of artificial intelligence (AI), mainly from the firms’ own public websites and public business listings. About the data explains the process step by step, including how we check it and where it falls short.
The firms and lawyers listed here don’t supply, review or approve their listings unless they’ve contacted us about them. A listing doesn’t mean a firm or lawyer has any relationship with LawOnline.ca.
No legal advice, no endorsement, no referral
- LawOnline.ca isn’t a law firm and doesn’t give legal advice. Nothing in the Directory, including our guides, is legal advice.
- A listing isn’t a recommendation, an endorsement, a rating or a certification of any firm or lawyer. The order in which listings appear isn’t a ranking of quality.
- The Directory isn’t a lawyer referral service. We don’t match you with a lawyer, and using it doesn’t create a lawyer and client relationship with anyone.
- The listing badge a firm or lawyer may show on their own website only means they’re listed here. It isn’t a certification or an endorsement, and it doesn’t mean we’ve checked their credentials.
Accuracy and verification
Listings are generated by AI and refreshed periodically. They may be incomplete, out of date or wrong, and that includes names, titles, practice areas, years of call, education, biographies, offices and contact details. Each listing shows the month its data was gathered.
Before you rely on anything in the Directory, confirm it on the firm’s or lawyer’s own website, and confirm a lawyer’s licence and current standing with their provincial regulator. Every profile links to the right regulator’s official directory, and that official record always takes priority over anything shown here.
Corrections and removal
If a listing about you or your firm is wrong, or you’d like it removed, here’s how it works.
- How to ask. Use the Correct or remove this listing link on the profile, the submission form, or email directory@lawonline.ca. Tell us which listing it is and what’s wrong.
- Hidden right away. A correction or removal request sent through the form hides the listing from the Directory immediately, before anyone has read it. If you email us instead, we hide the listing when we read your message.
- Reviewed promptly. We aim to review every request within 10 business days. We’ll then correct the listing, remove it, or, if the request doesn’t hold up, restore it.
- Removals stick. Once we remove a listing, we record it so later updates of the Directory can’t bring it back.
- Protecting firms from bad-faith requests. So a rival can’t take a firm’s listing down for good, we confirm a permanent firm removal through the contact details published on the firm’s own website. Requests sent from an email address at the firm’s own domain are the easiest for us to verify.
- Details you ask us not to show stay off your listing, even when we refresh the data.
Using the correction route doesn’t affect any other right you have under the law.
Using the Directory
You’re welcome to use the Directory to find and contact law firms and lawyers. You agree not to:
- copy, scrape or harvest the Directory in bulk, or republish its listings as your own dataset;
- use the Directory to send commercial electronic messages to the people listed in it, or otherwise in breach of Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) or privacy law;
- submit false correction or removal requests, or requests about a listing that isn’t yours to correct;
- interfere with the Directory’s operation or security.
We don’t sell the Directory’s data, and we don’t use it for marketing or outreach to the people listed.
Links to other websites
Profiles link to firms’ websites, maps, social media and regulators. We don’t control those sites and aren’t responsible for what they say or do.
Disclaimer of warranties
The Directory is provided free of charge, “as is” and “as available”. To the maximum extent permitted by law, LawOnline.ca makes no warranty or representation of any kind, express or implied, about the Directory or any listing, including about its accuracy, completeness, currency or fitness for a particular purpose.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, LawOnline.ca and its directors, employees, agents and contractors won’t be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss arising from reliance on a listing, in connection with your use of the Directory. Because the Directory is free, our total liability for any claim arising from it is limited to one hundred Canadian dollars (CAD $100). Nothing in these terms limits liability that can’t be limited by law.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. The date at the top shows when they last changed, and the version posted here is the one that applies.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. Any dispute about the Directory is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Ontario.
