About Loopstra Nixon LLP

Loopstra Nixon LLP is a full-service business and public law firm headquartered in Toronto, with a second downtown Toronto office and a Vaughan office in Ontario, plus U.S. satellite offices in Buffalo and New York City. Charles Loopstra and Sandy Nixon opened the firm as a general practice on June 1, 1973, in a storefront office in northwest Toronto, and Sandy Nixon joined as a partner the following year after being called to the bar. The firm operated for a time as Loopstra, Nixon and McLeish before restructuring in 2000 to focus on business and public law and returning to the Loopstra Nixon name.

In July 2023, the year it marked its 50th anniversary, Loopstra Nixon merged with Macdonald Sager, a Toronto firm founded in 1994, growing to more than 100 lawyers in what the two firms called one of Toronto's largest law firm mergers in more than a decade. Its practice now covers banking and financial services, business law, litigation and dispute resolution, municipal and land use planning, real estate, employment and labour, franchising, technology and intellectual property, and wills, trusts and estates, among other areas. The firm is the Canadian affiliate of LawExchange International, a network of independent firms with members in 23 countries.

The neighbourhood

Loopstra Nixon's head office sits in the Woodbine Place complex on Queens Plate Drive in northwest Toronto (Etobicoke), a street named for the Queen's Plate, a thoroughbred race first run in 1860 and held today at the neighbouring Woodbine Racetrack. The firm's own site describes this part of the city, away from the downtown core, as "where the heart of the GTA lives."

A second Toronto office is downtown in the Richmond-Adelaide Centre on Adelaide Street West, putting lawyers who work with financial-district clients closer to that business core, while a Vaughan office on New Park Place serves clients in York Region without a trip into the city.
