Turnpenney Milne LLP is a Toronto law firm that practises exclusively in workplace law, with a second office in Vancouver. Rachel Turnpenney and Catherine Milne founded the firm in May 2010. It represents both employers and employees and also works as an independent investigator in workplace disputes, a three sided vantage point the firm says helps it understand issues from every angle and resolve them practically.
The practice covers the full employment relationship, from hiring and policy design through terminations, layoffs and post-employment restrictions, and includes wrongful dismissal, human rights and accommodation, and workplace investigations. Turnpenney is listed on the federal registry of investigators under the Canada Labour Code's Workplace Harassment and Violence Prevention Regulations and holds the AWI-CH credential from the Association of Workplace Investigators. Milne, called to the Ontario bar in 1993 and the British Columbia bar in 2018, has conducted close to 100 workplace investigations and wrote Canadian Forms and Precedents, Employment. The firm also offers training programs for HR professionals, managers and legal teams on topics such as human rights, accommodation, performance management and workplace investigations.
The Toronto office sits in Berkeley Castle, a cluster of red brick buildings at the foot of Berkeley Street near the Esplanade. Joseph Simpson built the first structure there in 1868 for what became Toronto's first knitting factory, and the complex stood at the eastern edge of the original 1793 town site of York before landfill pushed the shoreline south. The mill sat vacant and condemned until a restoration completed in 1983 turned it into the mixed office and retail space it is today.
The Vancouver office is in Gastown, in the 1912 Malkin & Co. Grocery Warehouse at 55 Water Street. Like Berkeley Castle, the building was converted from an old warehouse into commercial and residential space while keeping its original brick and timber structure, putting the firm in one of Vancouver's oldest commercial districts.
