Thornton Grout Finnigan LLP (TGF) is a Toronto law firm with a narrow focus: commercial litigation and restructuring and insolvency law. It doesn't take on a general caseload. Instead its lawyers concentrate on complex disputes and corporate insolvencies for financial institutions, regulatory agencies, publicly traded companies, and the receivers and monitors that courts appoint to oversee troubled companies. The firm operates from a single office in the Toronto-Dominion Centre, in the heart of the city's financial district, with a team of lawyers and law clerks working across both practice areas.
TGF's lawyers have acted in some of the largest insolvency and restructuring matters in Canadian history. The firm acted for the UK Pension Claimants, the largest single creditor in the worldwide Nortel Networks estate, in a case that produced a cross border pro rata allocation of US$7.3 billion. It has also acted for the court appointed receiver of Bridging Finance, for creditors in the Air Canada restructuring, for the court appointed monitor Ernst & Young in the restructuring of Stelco, and in the wind down of Blockbuster Canada's store network. Robert I. Thornton and John L. Finnigan continue to practise at the firm.
Wheelchair accessibleTGF's office is in the tower at 100 Wellington Street West, part of the Toronto-Dominion Centre complex in the heart of Toronto's financial district. The complex has been designated under the Ontario Heritage Act since 2003, and about 21,000 people work there, making it the largest commercial office complex in Canada. It's a fitting address for a firm whose clients are mostly banks, regulators, and other financial institutions.
