Boughton Law is a full service law firm based in downtown Vancouver, with its office in the Three Bentall Centre tower on Burrard Street. Two UBC law graduates, James Edgar Boughton and Leslie R. Peterson, founded the firm in 1949, and it's stayed in the city ever since. The firm has grown to more than 120 lawyers, professionals and staff, working across four groups: Corporate & Commercial, Private Clients, Dispute Resolution and Public Sector, with practice areas that run from business and real estate law to immigration, tax, employment and Indigenous law.
The firm's Indigenous Law group advises First Nations and Indigenous owned businesses and organizations across British Columbia and other Western provinces and the territories on economic development, governance and related matters. It also acted as counsel to a First Nations alliance representing 38 First Nations on a federal Indigenous loan guarantee tied to an equity stake in a BC natural gas pipeline system. In 1993, Boughton opened an office in Hong Kong, a move the firm says made it the first Canadian law firm to do so. It's British Columbia's only member of Meritas, a global alliance of independent full service firms with more than 9,000 lawyers in over 93 countries, and it's held that membership for more than 20 years.
