Hummingbird Lawyers LLP traces back to February 1, 2011, when four colleagues founded the firm as Fortis, Muyal, Bhathal and Desai LLP. On May 10, 2013, the firm rebranded as Hummingbird Lawyers LLP, a name the founders chose deliberately to reflect qualities they wanted the firm to embody rather than to put any one name on the door. The new logo, designed by Josiah Jost, works a hummingbird silhouette into the negative space of a chess knight. The firm now operates from two Ontario offices, one in Toronto's Yorkville area and one in Concord, within the city of Vaughan.
The practice spans family law, real estate, wills and estates, civil and commercial litigation, condominium law, business and corporate law, health law, criminal and regulatory defence, and immigration. Family law, led by founding partner Jagjit Bhathal, runs a dedicated Mediation Centre staffed by lawyers trained in conflict resolution and also offers parenting coordination for parents managing ongoing post separation conflict. Commercial real estate is led by founding partner Andrew Fortis, described on the firm's site as a certified real estate specialist. The condominium law group represents boards, owners, and property managers in governance and disputes, including matters before the Condominium Authority Tribunal.
