Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP traces its roots to a New York partnership that Julius Frank and Samuel Weiss formed in April 1875. The firm went through several names over the following decades before adopting its current one in 1950, after Simon Rifkind joined what was then Paul, Weiss, Wharton & Garrison. It's headquartered in New York and now marks 150 years of operation, with more than 1,500 lawyers working across 11 offices on three continents.

The firm opened its Toronto office in April 2011, building on what it describes as half a century of involvement with businesses in Canada. Two partners joined from another firm's Toronto office to help open it, and the office has since moved from an initial location at 1 Yonge Street to its current offices at 77 King Street West. The Toronto office practises U.S. law exclusively rather than Ontario law, working alongside Canadian counsel on cross-border mergers and acquisitions, private equity, capital markets, U.S. securities and tax matters, litigation, antitrust, intellectual property and regulatory compliance.
