About Jane M. Gooding

Employers are the only clients Jane Gooding acts for, and the work covers the full span of workplace law, from labour relations and employment issues to human rights and disability management. A partner in the Hamilton office of Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti, Jane takes on files for unionized and non-union workplaces alike, whether they fall under provincial or federal rules.

On the public side, that means municipalities, police services, school boards and long-term care homes, along with other broader public sector bodies. Private sector clients run from broadcasters to manufacturers, and Jane has deep experience in the retail, manufacturing, education and healthcare sectors.

Jane earned an honours biology degree at McMaster University, studied law at the University of Western Ontario and was called to the Ontario bar in 2006. After a partnership at another Hamilton firm, Jane moved to Filion as a partner in 2013. As lead counsel, Jane has argued cases in front of private arbitrators, the Ontario Labour Relations Board and the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, and before the Superior Court, the Divisional Court and the Court of Appeal.

Best Lawyers named Jane its 2027 Lawyer of the Year for Labour and Employment Law in Hamilton. Jane is also a past chair of the board of directors at Today's Family.

Labour relations and arbitration

Jane speaks for employers in collective bargaining and labour relations disputes, and argues interest arbitrations and grievance arbitrations. Unfair labour practice applications are part of the litigation side.

Employment advice

Day to day, Jane advises on wrongful dismissals, employment contracts, workplace harassment and what employment standards require of an employer.

Human rights and disability management

Jane advises employers on human rights claims and works on disability management matters.

Health and safety charges

When an employer faces a charge under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Jane represents it in the proceeding.
