About Evan Campbell

Evan Campbell is a partner at Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti LLP who counsels employers on both sides of the public and private divide. Universities, municipalities, school boards and hospitals turn to Evan regularly for advice, and the wider client roster stretches from Fortune 500 companies and young start-ups to family-owned businesses in many different industries.

Litigation is a big part of the practice. Evan has appeared in Ontario's courts at every level, the Court of Appeal included, and regularly acts for employers in arbitrations and before labour and employment tribunals at both the federal and provincial level. Evan's also a frequent spokesperson for management across the table in collective bargaining.

Before coming to Filion as a partner in 2022, Evan spent years practising at a national law firm. A University of Ottawa law graduate, Evan was called to the Ontario bar in 2013.

Evan gives employers practical, forward-looking advice on discipline and dismissals, human rights questions and employment standards. The work also covers drafting employment contracts and workplace policies, along with workplace safety and insurance matters and labour relations in industrial and construction settings.

Unions, organizing and bargaining

When a union starts an organizing drive or files for certification, Evan helps the employer respond, and often speaks for management during collective negotiations.

Arbitrations, tribunals and courts

Evan represents employers at arbitration and before federal and provincial tribunals, and has argued employment matters in Ontario courts up to the Court of Appeal.

  • Alan Croke v. VuPoint System Ltd., SCC docket 41372 (leave sought from 2024 ONCA 354)

    A technician whose employment ended after declining to disclose COVID-19 vaccination status sued for wrongful dismissal; the motion judge found the contract had been frustrated by the vaccination policy of the employer's main client, and the Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal. Evan Campbell and Catherine Phelps were counsel for the employer, VuPoint System Ltd., when the Supreme Court of Canada dismissed the application for leave to appeal with costs in December 2024.
