About Kate

Kate Kempton specializes in Indigenous rights, decolonization litigation and large-scale negotiations, and governance and self-determination, with a mission centered on decolonizing Canadian legal systems that have harmed human and environmental communities. She began practicing Indigenous rights law in 2001 and worked as a senior partner at a national Indigenous rights firm based in Toronto until 2022, winning a number of significant cases involving injunctions against development, treaty rights defences, and judicial reviews, and contributing to major breakthroughs in Crown-business-Indigenous nations relations. She holds a BBA from the University of New Brunswick, a master's degree in journalism and mass communications from the University of Western Ontario, and a law degree from the University of Toronto. She was called to the bar in Ontario and Manitoba in 2001 and in British Columbia in 2022, and has been recognized in Lexpert's Most Frequently Recommended, Best Lawyers in America, and as a Lexpert-ranked lawyer in Aboriginal law. She is also a novelist and playwright and previously worked as a journalist for national TV news.
