About Julian
Julian Riddell supports Indigenous efforts to protect their rights and sovereignty and to uphold their laws and governance systems, with work emphasizing the intersection of environmental issues and First Nations' rights to their traditional land. He currently represents the Cowichan Nation in claims for recognition of rights and title, and worked on the Quw'utsun Nation's successful legal victory regarding title recognition at Tl'uqtinus village lands and fishing rights. Originally from Ontario, he studied Indigenous environmental studies at Trent University before earning his law degree at the University of British Columbia, and was called to the bar in both British Columbia and Ontario in 2018. During law school he was active in environmental justice activism. He has received multiple recognitions, including the Harper Grey LLP Prize in Environmental Law (2017) and the Law Foundation of British Columbia Public Interest Award (2015), and was ranked #10 in the Starfish Top 25 Environmentalists Under 25 in Canada (2014).
