About Asim Iqbal

Asim Iqbal is a Toronto partner at Gowling WLG who helps businesses in financial trouble, and the lenders, investors and boards with a stake in them, find a workable way through. Several of Asim's mandates have been high-profile. Asim acted as court-appointed representative counsel for the affected users of QuadrigaCX, the failed cryptocurrency exchange, and for certain unitholders in the Bridging Finance receivership. In the LTL Management talc case, a Johnson and Johnson matter that ran under Chapter 11 in the US with recognition proceedings here, Asim was Canadian counsel to the Official Committee of Talc Claimants. Looking back on 2024 for a Tiger Group industry roundup, Asim named Pride as the year's most interesting case, pointing to its scale, its complexity and how new the meeting of securitization lenders and insolvency law was, and called transportation a busy sector for receiverships.

Bankruptcy & Insolvency

Canada-US cross-border insolvency

Asim acts in insolvency matters that straddle the border, for foreign representatives and multinational corporations. On the debtor side, that has included ENTREC Corporation and BRON Media Corp. and its affiliates, each restructuring under the CCAA in Canada while running Chapter 15 proceedings in the US.

Restructuring advice for companies and their boards

For a company in distress, Asim handles formal restructuring proceedings as well as informal ones. Boards of both public and private corporations in that position also come to Asim when they're weighing their strategic options, conflicts of interest and directors' liability.

Secured creditors, lenders and buyers

Senior and subordinate secured creditors rely on Asim to enforce and protect their rights, in insolvency proceedings and in workouts, and financial institutions, along with ad hoc groups of creditors, turn to Asim with unusual enforcement problems. Asim also acts for purchasers and distressed investors buying troubled assets or whole businesses, and has acted for Laurentian Bank of Canada as senior secured creditor in the Mady Collier Centre CCAA proceedings.

Court officers and construction insolvencies

Asim's clients have included court officers such as trustees, receivers and monitors, among them the Monitor in the Carillion Group's Canadian restructuring. Stakeholders in insolvent construction projects are another group Asim represents, and Asim has written on lien priorities and the trust provisions of Ontario's Construction Lien Act.
