About Adam Bazak

Adam Bazak is a Toronto partner at Gowling WLG who argues cases at trial and on appeal, in private law and public law alike. On the private side that means class actions for plaintiffs and for defendants, commercial and banking fights, product liability and other tort claims, and professional liability files. Clients come in every shape: banks and corporations, governments and regulators, class members, professionals and individuals.

Called to the Ontario bar in 2017, Adam earned a Juris Doctor at Osgoode Hall Law School and was a serious mooter there. Fellow students voted Adam onto the Osgoode Mooting Society's executive more than once, and a run in the Jessup International Law Moot ended with Adam representing Canada at the international rounds in Washington, D.C. Today the courtroom map is wide: the Ontario Securities Commission, the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario and every level of Ontario court, courts in Manitoba and Quebec, the Federal Court and the Federal Court of Appeal, plus leave applications to the Supreme Court of Canada for both appellants and respondents.

Several of Adam's class actions involve veterans' benefits. Adam is one of the Gowling WLG lawyers on White et al. v. HMTK, a Federal Court class proceeding seeking compensation for underpaid benefits caused by errors Veterans Affairs Canada made when calculating annual adjustments to disability benefits. Adam was also among plaintiff's counsel in a proposed class action for more than 40,000 disabled veterans over prorated benefit indexation, where in December 2025 the Federal Court adjourned the certification motion.

Civil Litigation & Dispute Resolution Class Actions

Class actions on both sides

Adam was class counsel for roughly 15,000 Canadian and war veterans in Toth v. Canada, a Charter equality claim, and for about 330,000 Canadian Forces and RCMP veterans in Manuge v. Canada; each ended in a settlement the court approved. On the defence side, Adam acted for a manufacturer in Park v. Nongshim Co., Ltd. et al., a certified class action alleging price-fixing among Korean noodle makers that settled.

Danforth shooting litigation

In Price v. Smith & Wesson Corp., Adam is counsel to the plaintiffs in a proposed class proceeding for people shot, injured or killed in the July 22, 2018 Danforth shooting in Toronto, and related individuals. At the first stage of certification, the court dismissed the gun maker's motion to strike.

Commercial disputes and trials

As the plaintiff's trial counsel in G&K Services Canada Inc. v. Aivaliotis, a breach of contract case over a long-term services agreement, Adam obtained every dollar of contractual damages the client had claimed. In 2024 Adam represented the applicant in 1797472 Ontario Inc. v Independent Electricity System Operator.

Public law and state immunity

Adam's public law work covers judicial review, administrative law, state immunity and constitutional challenges to government action. For a foreign government agency, Adam was counsel in Petersen v. Defense Contract Management Agency International, where the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario dismissed the application as beyond its jurisdiction. In Tanny v. Royal Victoria Hospital et al., the Quebec Superior Court dismissed a proposed class proceeding against Adam's client on immunity grounds, and the Court of Appeal of Quebec unanimously agreed.

Enforcing judgments

Adam enforces judgments, including foreign and cross-border ones, for private companies and for public agencies such as North American financial and securities regulators.
