About Aaron Hunter

Aaron Hunter helps the companies behind major capital projects get their contracts right. As a partner with Gowling WLG's Infrastructure and Construction Group in Toronto, Aaron works on mining, sustainable energy, infrastructure and conventional building projects, acting for owners, contractors, suppliers and others with a stake in them as they work through procurement. Complex commercial agreements are the core of the job: how they're structured, how they're written and how their terms get negotiated.

Aaron's route into this work ran through the client side of the table. It began in corporate and securities law, with time at a Canadian business law firm and in the Toronto office of a global firm, which grounded Aaron in how capital projects get evaluated and financed before anything is built. In-house roles followed: counsel to two engineering firms with a global reach, plus a job mixing legal and business duties at a large Canadian mining company whose assets spanned Africa and both Americas. Aaron joined Gowling WLG as a partner in February 2023. Aaron was called to the New York bar in 2006 and to the Ontario bar in 2008.

Aaron knows what it takes to deliver a project in a remote location, where local resources are thin and the physical conditions are tough, and brings hands-on experience with supply chain practice, policy work, risk management and integrity issues. The aim is to set each project up well at the outset and then stay with the client through every stage that follows, with advice that's practical and grounded in reality.

When amendments to Ontario's Construction Act took effect on January 1, 2026, Aaron joined Gowling WLG colleagues for a webinar on the changes, taking the holdback and lien rules along with invoicing and prompt payment. That same month, the Daily Commercial News quoted Aaron on how annual holdback moves down the contracting chain, with each tier paying the next within 14 days unless there's a lien.
