Milestones & recognition

• Bennett Jones was founded in Calgary in 1922, in part by R.B. Bennett, who went on to become Canada's 11th prime minister in 1930.
• In 1922, R.B. Bennett purchased and gifted land to the city of Calgary on the condition that it be leased to the Calgary Stampede, and handled the legal work. Bennett Jones remains the Stampede's principal legal advisor.
• The firm opened its Edmonton office in 1947, the same year Imperial Oil's discovery near Leduc, Alberta marked the start of the province's oil and gas industry.
• Bennett Jones opened its Toronto and Ottawa offices in 1989, then added Vancouver in 2014, a New York office in 2018, and a Montreal office in 2024.
• The firm marked its centennial anniversary in 2022.

In the community

• Lawyers in Toronto have a multi-year partnership with Pro Bono Ontario, providing services in small claims matters and to self-represented litigants, and acting as amicus counsel to the court.
• The firm helped Pro Bono Ontario build its Trial Matching Project, which connects Bennett Jones lawyers with self-represented litigants who have a scheduled Small Claims Court trial, and its Amicus Duty Counsel Program at Civil Practice Court.
• Litigators at the firm act as supervising counsel for the Investor Protection Clinic at Osgoode Hall Law School, where students give free legal advice to people who believe their investments were mishandled.
• Bennett Jones lawyers support Pro Bono Ontario's Free Legal Advice Hotline, including a joint volunteer day with another company's in-house legal team that answered a record 87 calls.
• Each year, the firm awards three C$10,000 Future Leaders in Law scholarships to incoming first-year law students at accredited Canadian law schools who plan to focus on business law and who identify as Indigenous or Black, or are the first in their immediate family to pursue post-secondary education.
