About Matt

Matt McPherson is a partner at OKT who advises First Nation governments and organizations across Canada on Aboriginal and treaty rights claims, resource development agreements, and environmental regulatory processes. His work often centers on the protection of section 35 rights, including consultation and accommodation, and he has particular experience with matters involving fisheries and water protection. Matt also advises clients on Indigenous data sovereignty, helping First Nations negotiate agreements to safeguard cultural resources and traditional knowledge systems. He holds an LLB from the University of Victoria and an MBA from York University, clerked at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, and worked in international advertising and strategy before becoming a lawyer. He is co-editor of the fifth edition of the Aboriginal Law Handbook and is recognized in the field of Aboriginal law by the Lexpert Directory and Best Lawyers in Canada.
