About Mark
Mark Handelman was called to the Ontario Bar in 1978 and spent his early career in London, Ontario, handling civil litigation and criminal defence and prosecution work until 2001. He was one of the first lawyers in Ontario's Official Guardian Child Representation Program. In 1998 he joined the Consent and Capacity Board, later becoming Regional Vice Chair for Toronto in 2001, a role that led him to step back from private practice. After his term ended in 2008, he returned to health care law, representing practitioners, substitute decision-makers, and patients before the courts and the Board, while teaching on consent, capacity, and end-of-life issues. He also served on the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal. Mark holds an MHSc in bioethics from the University of Toronto and was reappointed to the Consent and Capacity Board in 2019, though he stopped practising law in 2020.
