About Laurie Tucker

Laurie Tucker is a partner at Burn Tucker Lachaîne in Ottawa, and Laurie's own practice is limited to serious personal injury and insurance litigation. The files run from car crashes and slips and falls to wrongful death and disability insurance claims. The Law Society of Ontario has certified Laurie as a specialist in civil litigation.

Laurie earned a history degree at the University of Waterloo, finished law school at Queen's in 1999 and then moved to Ottawa. After articling with a local firm, Laurie was called to the bar in 2001, stayed on there as an associate and later made partner. In 2011 Laurie was practising with Doucet McBride LLP in Ottawa. Since 2014 Laurie has worked at Burn Tucker Lachaîne beside Colleen Burn and Éliane Lachaîne, partners from the same long-time team, at a firm that acts only for injured people.

Laurie has held a string of roles in the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association. Laurie chaired its New Lawyer Division from 2004 to 2007, sat on its board from 2007 to 2016 and again from 2019 to 2024, and became president in May 2023 for a one-year term. Along the way Laurie has chaired OTLA education conferences, presented papers at them and written for The Litigator, the association's publication. The Law Society, the American Association for Justice and the County of Carleton Law Association have also invited Laurie to speak, and Laurie and Andrea Lim of Dutton Brock LLP are the chairs of a joint OTLA and Canadian Defence Lawyers program set for March 4, 2027.

In 2008 Laurie worked with OTLA to bring its Helmets on Kids program to Ottawa, and by 2011 Laurie was heading it up. Laurie counts it a privilege to help clients put their lives back together after an accident. Away from work, there's time outdoors with the dogs, gardening, travel, reading, family and friends, and nights out at the theatre or the ballet.

Accident benefits and the Licence Appeal Tribunal

Laurie acted for the applicant in Lee v. Co-operators General Insurance Company, 2026 ONLAT 23-009843/AABS-R, a car accident case where the Licence Appeal Tribunal granted reconsideration of an earlier decision and approved attendant care benefits. Laurie has also presented on choosing and timing medical legal reports in accident benefits files (2019) and on LAT procedure at the Law Society's 2023 Motor Vehicle Litigation Summit.

Long-term disability claims

At OTLA's 2017 long-term disability conference, Laurie presented on examining the insurer's representative. In 2021 Laurie wrote a guide for people whose long-term disability benefits had been cut off or refused.

Road accident and other injury claims

In 2018 Laurie presented to fellow trial lawyers on proving an injury claim when a crash left little property damage. An earlier talk, in 2007, covered claims to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board.
