About G. Edward Oldfield

G. Edward Oldfield, who goes by Ted, is counsel at Bennett Grant LLP, and Ted's practice is limited to clients in agriculture. For farmers that covers a broad mix of work: civil litigation, family law, succession planning, and hearings before the specialized tribunals that rule on farm matters. Agricultural law has been Ted's focus almost from the start of a long career, and at Bennett Grant it's a practice Ted shares with Robert Scriven.

After undergraduate studies at Wilfrid Laurier University, Ted went on to Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the bar in 1984. Before joining Bennett Grant as counsel in 2022, Ted spent many years as a partner at Oldfield, Greaves, D'Agostino, a Waterloo firm that worked out of the historic Erb-Kumpf house. Ted has argued cases at every level of court in Ontario and at the Supreme Court of Canada.

Public service runs through the same career. For six years Ted chaired the Normal Farm Practices Protection Board, which decided disputes between farmers and nearby property owners over the standards farmers should follow, and Ted later sat as an acting drainage referee for the province under the Drainage Act. Ted has also given papers and lectures at conferences and education programs, some of them put on by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

Outside the law, farming is one of Ted's own interests, along with travel, hiking and time with grandchildren.
