About Wudassie Tamrat

Wudassie Tamrat is on a temporary secondment with an outside institution until May 2027 and isn't working on client matters at the firm in the meantime. Tamrat is an associate with Gowling WLG's Advocacy Group in Ottawa, where the practice centres on civil and commercial litigation, including contract fights and disputes over property rights, along with privacy and access to information, and international trade questions like sanctions, tariffs and export and import controls.

Called to the Ontario bar in 2019, Tamrat earned a JD at Osgoode Hall Law School the year before. Law school meant a senior editor's seat at the Osgoode Hall Law Journal, which ran Tamrat's student review of Fiduciaries of Humanity, a book on how international law constitutes authority, along with time at the Osgoode Mediation Clinic. Before that came an honours BA at Queen's University in political studies and global development studies, plus a turn as managing editor of Politicus Journal.

English is the working language, and Tamrat also speaks French, Spanish and Amharic. In the profession, the associate is treasurer of the Ottawa chapter of the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers, and in 2023 presented Loy-English v. The Ottawa Hospital at a County of Carleton Law Association civil litigation conference. Community work has included Pro Bono Ontario in 2019 and, in 2016, serving as an executive member and youth leader with the Ethiopian and Eritrean Community Sisterhood in Toronto. Away from law, it's tennis, volleyball and as much travel with family as possible.
