About Katie
Katie Black is the founder of Black & Associates and a civil litigation lawyer whose practice focuses on commercial litigation, arbitration, and appellate advocacy. She has represented clients before commercial arbitrators, Ontario's Superior Court, Divisional Court, and Court of Appeal, as well as the Federal Court and the Supreme Court of Canada, in matters spanning contract, shareholder and governance disputes, professional negligence, defamation, municipal law, and regulatory and constitutional law. Before founding the firm, she clerked for former Chief Justice of Canada Beverley McLachlin, worked in the Supreme Court Advocacy Group at a national firm, and helped establish a mid-sized litigation boutique. In 2016 she was seconded to the federal Minister of Justice as Federal Judicial Affairs Advisor, supporting reform of Canada's judicial appointment process and helping facilitate over 130 judicial appointments, including three to the Supreme Court of Canada. She received her law degree, graduating magna cum laude, from the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Law, where she has taught first-year contract law, and holds a B.Sc. Honours with Distinction from the University of Toronto. Her recognitions include the CCLA's Gordon F. Henderson Award, the OBA's David Scott, Q.C. Award for Pro Bono Law, and Ottawa Business Journal's Top 40 Under 40.
