About William

Bill Cooper has over 50 years of tax and financial experience, including eight years as a financial analyst and controller at a multi-national forest products company before practising as a tax lawyer in Vancouver, Ottawa and Toronto. He has advised public companies, private owner-managed businesses, and over 100 First Nations, including on tax-effective investment structures, settlement trusts and joint venture business investment structures. In Ottawa he worked at senior levels of the Canada Revenue Agency and the Department of Finance, preparing Advance Income Tax Rulings and advising federal ministers on new tax legislation. He is co-founder of Meritas Canada Tax and previously taught Tax Law and Policy at Carleton University. He was called to the BC Bar in 1983 and the Ontario Bar in 1988, and is a Chartered Professional Accountant. He practises through a personal law corporation.
