About Thomas
Tom Hawkins is a founding partner of Bernard LLP practising in maritime law, insurance defence and commercial litigation, advising on marine insurance, vessel arrest, towage, pollution, collision, cargo and maritime employment matters. He has conducted cases in the Federal Court, the BC Supreme Court, and the Supreme Court of Canada, and was counsel in the investigation of the 2006 sinking of the Queen of the North and represented families of the 2015 Leviathan II whale-watching tragedy. He serves as Adjunct Professor of maritime law at UBC's Faculty of Law and was appointed Vice President of the Pacific Regional Advisory Council on Oil Spill Response by the Minister of Transport. He holds a BA from Simon Fraser University (1982) and an LL.B. from the University of Saskatchewan (1987), and was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1988.
