About Ron

Ron Hay is a partner at Stohn Hay who advises Canadian and international clients on media, entertainment, and communications matters, with a focus on film and television rights acquisition, production, co-production structures, and distribution. He began his legal career as an associate at McMillan Binch before moving in-house, first as Vice-President, Business & Legal Affairs for Television at Alliance Atlantis Communications and then as Vice-President, Business & Legal Affairs at Balmur Entertainment. He returned to private practice in 2001 and co-founded the firm in 2003 with Stephen Stohn and David Dembroski. Before law, Ron spent six years as a professional musician, playing viola with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra, and the Hamilton Philharmonic. He was called to the Ontario bar in 1994 after earning his LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School, and holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Toronto. Ron co-chaired the Law Society of Ontario's Entertainment & Media Law Symposium from 2011 to 2017 and served on the board of Ontario Creates from 2017 to 2020.
