About Robert
Robert J. Hawkes, KC has been lead counsel in complex class actions, defamation actions, corporate oppression and shareholder derivative actions, and emergency injunction applications, appearing before every level of court in Alberta. He practiced as an associate and partner at a leading national firm from 1993 to 2005 before joining JSS Barristers, where he continues a high level practice in commercial litigation with an emphasis on class actions, defamation, and constitutional law. Robert studied philosophy at the University of Calgary and the University of Saskatchewan before earning his LL.B. from the University of Calgary in 1993, where he was on the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Team and won the Neil V. Germaine Scholarship. He was called to the Alberta bar in 1994 and has been named Litigation Star by Benchmark Litigation every year since 2012 and Lawyer of the Year for Defamation and Media Law by Best Lawyers in 2022. Robert has acted as principal for four articling students who are now members of the Law Society of Alberta.
