About Richard
Richard J. Balfour is senior counsel at Torys LLP with extensive experience leading corporate and securities transactions in Canada and abroad. He has served as lead counsel on public and private mergers and acquisitions and securities offerings, including privatizations and demutualizations. Balfour also advises securities regulators and governments on market regulation, including legislative drafting. He sat on the Legal Advisory Committee to the Canadian Securities Transition Office and to the Expert Panel on Securities Regulation in Canada. Balfour has taught mergers and acquisitions law at the University of Toronto and international securities transactions at Osgoode Hall's Business LLM program, and previously held an assistant professorship at Osgoode teaching corporate and property law. He chairs The Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall and sits on the Canadian Art Foundation's advisory board.
