Michael Wright advises and advocates for unions and professional associations across sectors such as energy, the arts, and manufacturing, having negotiated collective agreements for organizations including Ontario Power Generation, Hydro One, Stelco, and arts organizations such as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the National Ballet of Canada. He has served on arbitration boards and handled hundreds of grievances, and represents union pension and benefit plans in court on matters ranging from injunctions to class actions. His employment law practice covers senior executives and professionals in financial services, health care, and manufacturing. In Heller v. Uber, acting as co-counsel for the proposed class of Uber drivers, he successfully argued that the arbitration clause in the driver agreement was invalid, a position the Supreme Court of Canada upheld in 2020 in a ruling the Globe and Mail described as a landmark win for workers in the gig economy. He earned his LL.B. from Osgoode Hall in 1989 and a J.S.D. from Stanford in 1993, and was called to the bar in 1991.
