Mark Gelowitz is a key resource for the firm's corporate governance and securities litigation practice. His work is business-focused and spans civil and securities litigation, appellate proceedings, and international commercial arbitration, together with a wide array of corporate and commercial law issues such as merger and acquisition disputes, director and officer liability, corporate governance, shareholder conflicts, oppression claims, confidentiality, defamation, commercial leasing disputes, mining litigation, and class actions. Gelowitz has argued cases before the Supreme Court of Canada, the courts of appeal of Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Yukon, the superior courts of numerous provinces, and the securities commissions of Ontario and British Columbia. His experience in international commercial and investor-state arbitration includes significant hearings held in London, Rome, Geneva, Tokyo, Warsaw and The Hague. He completed two appellate clerkships, first with the late Chief Justice E.D. Bayda of the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal in 1986 and later with the late Justice John Sopinka of the Supreme Court of Canada in 1989, earning his B.C.L. from the University of Oxford between the two placements. Gelowitz is a co-author of the fifth edition of "Sopinka, Gelowitz and Rankin on the Conduct of an Appeal."
