About Leah
Leah Hughes practices governance, policy and legislative development, treaty implementation, land management, employment law, and human rights, with specific areas including consultation and accommodation, employment and human rights, housing, land code, land interests, and treaty negotiation and implementation. She joined Woodward & Company as a summer student in 2018, articled in 2019, and became a lawyer in 2022, having previously gained experience at a human rights commission and in family law practice on Vancouver Island. She holds a BA in anthropology from the University of Victoria and a joint civil and common law degree (BCL/LLB) from McGill University's bilingual law program, and completed an interdisciplinary field course on Haudenosaunee law in Kahnawake, Quebec, as well as a community-based field course on W̱SÁNEĆ law. She is a member of the Law Society of British Columbia and the Law Society of Yukon, both since 2020, and is deeply committed to using the law as a tool for justice and empowerment for Indigenous peoples.
