About Kelly Morris

Kelly Morris helps insurance businesses work within the rules that govern them in Canada. As counsel in Gowling WLG's Toronto office, in the firm's Regulatory Practice Group, Morris handles corporate, regulatory and compliance questions for insurers and reinsurers from Canada and abroad, for intermediaries such as brokers, agents and adjusters, and for banks, warranty providers and third-party administrators.

The work runs from licensing and governance to deals, including buying insurance companies and agencies and winding insurers up. Privacy law and Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation are part of the practice too.

Morris earned an LLB at the University of Toronto in 1986 and was called to the Ontario bar in 1988. Several Canadian law firms came before Gowling WLG, among them Torys LLP, where Morris joined in 2017 and spent more than eight years. The move to Gowling WLG came alongside Jill McCutcheon and Melissa Prado, who now co-lead its insurance and reinsurance practice.

Chambers Canada ranks Morris in Insurance: Transactional & Regulatory. If you'd like a sense of how Morris thinks, the articles are a good place to start: they cover Ontario's licensing framework for life and health managing general agents, Alberta's move to allow captive insurers, and the barriers that make it hard to offer financial services from one province to another.
