About John M. Campbell

John M. Campbell is counsel in Gowling WLG's Toronto office and part of its National Tax Group. The focus is income tax, both domestic and international. Much of Campbell's time goes to corporate reorganizations, mergers and acquisitions, international tax planning and other business deals, with an eye to answers that work in practice while keeping a company compliant.

Planning is only half of it. When a client ends up in a dispute with a federal or provincial tax authority, Campbell takes on the file, whether it's a reassessment, a notice of objection or another kind of tax fight. That work has meant appearances in the Tax Court of Canada, the Federal Court of Appeal and the Ontario courts. Campbell came to Gowling WLG's Canadian tax team as counsel, bringing that dispute experience along with a grounding in both domestic and cross-border issues.

Called to the Ontario bar in 1983, Campbell teaches tax law to other professionals, too. The Canadian Tax Foundation and the Law Society of Ontario have both had the lawyer at the lectern, and Campbell still writes and speaks often about where tax law is heading. Past talks range from taxing patent and IP licences to the residence rules for individuals, and the published work includes pieces on foreign affiliate dumping and upstream loans.
