About John

John Poyser is a partner focusing exclusively on estate litigation. Besides his Winnipeg practice, he also has an office in Calgary as the Wealth and Estate Law Group and practises in Toronto as a senior litigation lawyer with WEL Partners, a firm dedicated to wills and estate disputes. He helps clients across Manitoba, Alberta, and Ontario challenge or defend transfers of wealth made by wills, gifts, and trusts, and advises clients who want to take protective steps while still living. He is a past chair of the Canadian Bar Association's Wills, Estates and Trusts Section and a past deputy chair of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, having served on STEP's Worldwide Council from 2013 to 2016. He wrote Capacity and Undue Influence, an eight-hundred page textbook on the law of wealth transfer published by Carswell in 2014, and co-authored ten editions of The Taxation of Trusts, a Practitioner's Guide. He founded the National Concordance, a compendium comparing succession laws across Canada, and is an associate editor of the Estates and Trusts Reports.
