About John
John was Counsel to the firm from 1998 until his retirement in 2020, building a reputation as a persuasive advocate for employees and unions in mediation. In 2012 his peers selected him for inclusion among the Best Lawyers in Canada in employment and labour law. His cases covered accommodation and human rights, job competitions, discharge and discipline, harassment, occupational health and safety, and collective agreement interpretation. In 1999 he appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada as co-counsel for the B.C. Government Employees' Union in the landmark Meiorin accommodation case. Before practicing labour law in Ontario, John served as NDP Member of Parliament for Victoria from 1988 to 1993 and worked in British Columbia's first NDP government. He holds a B.A. and LL.B. from the University of Toronto and a Master of Theological Studies from the University of British Columbia's Vancouver School of Theology, and was admitted to the Ontario bar and the British Columbia bar.
