About Jean

From 2005 to 2015, Jean Teillet was a partner at Pape Salter Teillet, and she continued as Senior Counsel with the firm until she stepped back from legal practice in 2024. Across her career as an Indigenous rights lawyer she worked both as a litigator and as a treaty negotiator, arguing twelve separate cases at the Supreme Court of Canada, among them R. v Powley and a dispute involving the Taku River Tlingit First Nation. She took part in treaty negotiations for First Nations communities in the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and British Columbia, and from 2007 to 2022 she was chief negotiator for the Stó:lō Xwexwilmexw bands under the BC Treaty Process. Jean also provided legal counsel on women's rights issues, including for the Association of Ontario Midwives and the Morgentaler Clinic. She holds an LLM and LLB from the University of Toronto and a BFA from York University, and wrote The North-West is Our Mother, a history of the Métis Nation that earned the Carol Shields Winnipeg Book Award.
