Alex Monem is a partner who advises Indigenous governments across Canada on major energy and resource development projects, including nuclear generation and small modular reactors, nuclear waste facilities, hydroelectric developments, transmission and storage projects, pipelines and large-scale mines. That work includes securing free, prior and informed consent protections and negotiating agreements that create enforceable standards and frameworks respecting Indigenous jurisdiction. Alex helps ensure credible environmental and impact assessments that incorporate Indigenous-led processes, cultural values and traditional laws, and regularly represents Indigenous governments before energy regulators and tribunals in licensing and approval proceedings. Alex holds an LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School and a BA from the University of Toronto, is admitted to the bars of Ontario and Yukon, and has practised in this area for around 25 years.
