About Jasmine Samra

Jasmine Samra gives organizations practical, strategic advice on handling data breaches and other privacy incidents. That's one part of a privacy, cyber security, AI and data governance practice serving clients in technology, financial services and insurance, with work that reaches into AI tools and biometrics as well as Canada's anti-spam law (CASL) and the CRTC's Do Not Call rules for marketing and electronic messages.

Jasmine also teaches. Jasmine is on the faculty of Osgoode's Certificate in Privacy and Cybersecurity Law and spoke there in March 2026 on new frontiers in privacy law. In June 2024, Jasmine and Carole Piovesan of INQ Law led an Osgoode Hall Law School session on where AI law, regulation and policy are heading and how financial institutions are handling it. Western's law faculty has brought Jasmine in as a guest lecturer too, for a Disruptive Technologies and Law course in February 2025 and an Intellectual Property course that November. On the writing side, recent pieces in the Canadian Privacy Law Review have looked at blockchain, deceptive design patterns, Bill C-27 and Alberta's public-sector privacy overhaul.

Today Jasmine is counsel in Gowling WLG's Toronto office, sitting on two teams there: Cyber Security and Data Protection, and Technology. The move to the firm followed an in-house role as Senior Counsel, Privacy and Social Media, at Royal Bank of Canada, which Jasmine took on in 2017. At the bank, the work covered privacy, cyber security and social media matters worldwide, from GDPR compliance measures to drafting consent frameworks, data protection agreements and privacy policies with a global reach.

Before that, Jasmine practised at Blaney McMurtry LLP from 2011, as an associate through 2016 and as a partner from 2017, with a focus at the time on corporate and commercial law and mergers and acquisitions. Early on, a secondment put Jasmine inside a corporate client as that company's only in-house corporate counsel. Jasmine was called to the Ontario bar in 2006, a year after finishing law school at Western, and holds the CIPP/C designation from the International Association of Privacy Professionals, earned in 2019.
