About James
James Williams is counsel at Carbert Waite LLP and is both a lawyer and a Chartered Accountant. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Touche Ross (now Deloitte) in Montreal before beginning his legal career in Calgary in 1981 with Ballem McDill & MacInnes (now Gowling WLG), and later practised tax and corporate law with Borden Ladner Gervais LLP before joining Carbert Waite LLP as Associated Counsel in 2007. He handles general corporate and commercial matters including incorporations, share capital reorganizations, business purchases and sales, and unanimous shareholder agreements, with over 40 years of tax law experience relating to estate freezes, succession planning and tax-deferred rollovers. His practice is now focused on owner-managed private corporations and succession and estate planning, including wills, enduring powers of attorney and probate applications. He earned a B.Comm with distinction from Concordia University in 1975, qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1977, and earned his LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1981, being admitted to the Alberta bar in 1982.
