About Hossein Moghtaderi

Hossein Moghtaderi is a partner in the Toronto office of Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti LLP, advising employers on labour, employment and human rights questions, whether or not the workplace has a union. Disability management takes up a good share of the practice: Hossein regularly helps clients with workers' compensation claims and with absences that aren't tied to the job, and has argued a wide mix of matters in the courts and before administrative tribunals. What draws Hossein to this field is that it's about people. The days involve close work with clients and with lawyers on the other side, regular appearances in front of different adjudicators, and sometimes a walk, drive or flight to a hearing elsewhere in Ontario.

The path to that practice began in Iran. At 18, Hossein moved to Canada to start a new life and found a real home here, in a country built on the rule of law, respect for human rights and a welcome for diversity. A friend's run-in with the justice system pushed Hossein toward law: a couple of months before applying to law school, Hossein helped that friend through the Toronto courts, and the experience was enough to win Hossein over to the profession. In a first-year public law class at the University of Ottawa, Roncarelli v. Duplessis made a lasting impression, as the decision often cited for the principle that no public official stands above the law. Hossein later completed Toronto Metropolitan University's Law Practice Program in 2014/2015, doing the work placement at Hicks Morley, and was called to the Ontario bar in 2016.

Other lawyers hear from Hossein often. In 2024 alone, Hossein spoke at Law Society of Ontario programs on major case law and on handling PTSD and acquired brain injury in the WSIB process, at Ontario Bar Association sessions on surveillance evidence and entitlement on an aggravation basis, and at a Lancaster House human rights conference in Toronto. Hossein co-chaired the OBA's Annual Update on Human Rights in 2023 and sat on its panel on psychological injuries at the May 2026 update on workplace safety and insurance law. HR groups and organizations around the province bring Hossein in to speak, too. Best Lawyers has included Hossein in Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch in Canada since 2025.

For more than ten years Hossein has served on the executives of the Labour & Employment Law and Sexual and Gender Diversity Alliance sections, active in both the Canadian Bar Association and the Ontario Bar Association. Inside the firm, Hossein sits on the Associate and Student Committee and helps recruit, develop and mentor newer lawyers. As a past member of Filion's Culture and Diversity Committee, Hossein is proud to push for workplaces that are more equitable.
