About Emilie
Emilie Taman has nearly fifteen years of experience in human rights advocacy as a lawyer, educator, and community organizer, and has appeared before every level of court in Ontario. A former federal Crown prosecutor and law professor with the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Common Law, she was named one of Canada's top 25 most influential lawyers by Canadian Lawyer Magazine in 2018. She co-hosts the podcast the Docket, discussing complex legal issues including the Omar Khadr settlement, the extradition of Hassan Diab, the Colten Boushie verdict, and systemic racism in the criminal justice system. As a community and political activist, she has advocated for accessible libraries, refugee resettlement, harm reduction, economic equality, affordable housing, and climate action, and has run for City Council and for federal office. Taman earned her LL.B. from Dalhousie Law School in 2004, clerked for the Ontario Court of Appeal and then for the Honourable Ian Binnie at the Supreme Court of Canada, and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2006.
