About Dom Glavota

Lenders are at the heart of Dom Glavota's practice. As a partner and the leader of Gowling WLG's lending practice group, Dom works out of both the Toronto and Hamilton offices, regularly advising major financial institutions as well as non-institutional lenders on deals at home and abroad. The practice covers three fields: financing, real estate, and restructuring and insolvency.

Dom's degrees span science and law: an honours BSc in chemistry from the University of Western Ontario, then an LLB from the University of Windsor. Called to the Ontario bar in 1997, Dom now sits on the executive of the firm's Financial Services Industry Group and once served as editor of Corporate Finance and Banking, a loose-leaf service from LexisNexis.

Working with the firm's Practice Innovation Group, Dom has helped design, roll out and fine-tune new, more efficient ways of handling loan documents and chasing defaulted loans. Today Dom heads a team managing the recovery of a large, Canada-wide book of defaulted commercial loans, run on portfolio management software and defined work process designs.

The businesses behind Dom's financings operate in Canada and the United States, in fields ranging from agriculture and automotive to shipping and telecommunications.

Bankruptcy & Insolvency

Syndicated and secured lending

Dom has acted for The Toronto-Dominion Bank as agent for a lender syndicate on amended and restated senior secured facilities for Glacier Ventures International Corp., which went partly toward buying substantially all of Hollinger International Inc.'s Canadian assets. Bank of Montreal has also retained Dom on reworking the terms of the Menu Foods Income Fund's credit facilities.

Farm, food and agri-business financing

Food and agriculture show up often in Dom's files. Dom was counsel to Rabobank Nederland's Canadian branch, as agent for a group of lenders, on operating and term facilities for an aquaculture company that farms and processes Atlantic salmon, and to Farm Credit Canada on financing solar panels installed on farmers' land.

Restructuring, distressed deals and loan recovery

Restructuring and insolvency is one of the three strands of Dom's practice, and the focus areas include distressed M&A and mortgage recovery services.
