About Aleksandra Finelli

Aleksandra (Aleks) Finelli works for the people who own, build and finance commercial property, from private landowners and developers to lenders and large multinational companies. A partner in the Real Estate Group at Gowling WLG with more than 20 years of experience, Aleks works on buying and selling land and buildings, sale-leasebacks, land development and the financing behind them. Leasing is a big part of the practice too, for landlords and tenants with office, retail and industrial space, mixed-use projects included.

Aleks was called to the Ontario bar in 2004 and later became a partner at Bennett Jones, which admitted Aleks to its partnership in 2016. In 2022 Aleks led the Bennett Jones team advising Extendicare on the sale of its retirement living business, a group of 11 communities spread across Ontario and Saskatchewan. Gowling WLG brought Aleks into its Toronto real estate group as a partner in February 2023, and today Aleks works with both the Toronto and Hamilton offices.

Alongside the commercial real estate work, Aleks has handled public-private partnerships, wind and solar power projects, seniors' housing and the move of gaming facilities into private hands. Aleks acted for the preferred proponent on the Fort McMurray West 500 KW Transmission Project in Alberta, and for a winning bidder in Ontario's Casino Operating and Services Agreements process, staying with that client through the purchase and build-out of new casino sites. On construction projects, clients get help from the land assembly stage through the financing and on into development.

Aleks is fluent in Polish, belongs to Toronto Commercial Real Estate Women (Toronto CREW) and mentors a number of lawyers. Aleks also co-authored a 2025 Law Society of Ontario paper on environmental baseline reports with Alexandra Sadvari.

Practice areas

Commercial acquisitions and leasing

Aleks handled the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board's purchase of its new head office in London, Ontario. Multinational companies also bring Aleks in to lease and buy warehouses and distribution centres in different parts of Canada.

Development and condominium finance

Developers come to Aleks to acquire, finance and build high-rise and mixed-use condominium projects, along with recreational properties. On the lending side, Aleks acts for a mezzanine lender on a range of development projects.

Solar and clean energy

Aleks has worked on developing and selling large solar photovoltaic facilities in Ontario. Aleks also helped a major grocery chain with its partnership with a company that provides electric and battery charging stations.

Court-supervised land sales

Aleks advised a court-appointed monitor on the sale and leaseback of industrial and farm lands in southwestern Ontario, a process that brought in many stakeholders, pension funds and the Province of Ontario among them.
