Dawne Way is the founder of Dawne Way Law, called to the bar in 1997 and appointed to the Crown Attorney's office in 2000 before launching her own practice in 2007. She represents victims of crime, primarily survivors of sexual assault, many of whom are children, in criminal and quasi-criminal proceedings, including applications under sections 276 and 278 of the Criminal Code and third-party records applications. Way is the author of a chapter on representing the victim in a sexual assault proceeding in Prosecuting and Defending Sexual Assault Offence Cases: A Practitioner's Handbook, and she has trained Crown attorneys, the Canadian Military Prosecution Service, and provincial law societies on victim advocacy and privacy protection in sexual assault cases. She also advises organizations such as hospitals, counselling services, and women's shelters on their obligations when subpoenaed, and supervises field placement students from Seneca College's Law Clerk and Paralegal program.
