Falconers LLP is a litigation firm based in Toronto, with additional offices in Thunder Bay and Little Current on Manitoulin Island. Founding Partner Julian N. Falconer holds degrees from the University of Alberta, McGill University, and the University of Toronto, and the University of Guelph-Humber conferred an honorary Doctor of Laws on Falconer in June 2014 in recognition of Falconer's work in social justice. Falconer has practiced law in policing, human rights, Indigenous rights, and state accountability for over thirty years, and co-authored The Annotated Coroners Act (Butterworths Press). Managing Partner Asha James, a graduate of the University of Windsor Law School with both American (JD) and Canadian (LLB) degrees, articled at the firm and was called to the bar of Ontario in June 2009.
The firm's practice spans civil, constitutional, and criminal litigation, coroner's inquests and public inquiries, administrative and labour law, and Aboriginal law, with a stated focus on state accountability. Since 2004 the firm has grown active in advocacy for First Nation communities, opening its Thunder Bay office for that work, and it now represents the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service and the Anishinabek Police Service, Ontario's two largest First Nation police services. To reach clients in fly-in communities, Falconer, who has logged over 3,000 hours as a pilot in a Cessna 182, flies the firm's own aircraft, nicknamed Falconair.
Wheelchair accessibleFalconers LLP's main office is at 10 Alcorn Avenue in Toronto, but the firm's footprint reaches much further north. It also keeps an office in Thunder Bay, opened as the firm became increasingly active in advocacy for First Nation communities after 2004, and a third office in Little Current on Manitoulin Island. From Thunder Bay, the firm represents the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service and the Anishinabek Police Service, and its lawyers travel on to fly-in communities across the north for meetings the road network can't reach.
For those trips, Julian Falconer, the firm's founding partner and a licensed pilot, flies the firm's own aircraft, nicknamed Falconair. It has carried the firm's lawyers to First Nations including Sandy Lake and Fort Albany, work that grew out of the firm's long involvement in Indigenous policing, child welfare, and residential school litigation.
