About Stephen

Stephen Stohn has practised as an entertainment and copyright lawyer since 1979, advising performers, songwriters, broadcasters, and film and television producers, after an earlier career as a performing artist and songwriter. He is widely known as executive producer of the Degrassi television franchise and, for close to 20 years until 2009, of the Juno Awards telecast, during which he chaired the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and the charity MusiCounts. He also produced Instant Star, Riverdale, and the films Me? and The Clown Murders, and currently serves as chancellor of Trent University. Stephen earned his J.D. from the University of Toronto in 1977 and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1979. He spent ten years as a partner at McCarthy Tetrault and has appeared as an expert witness before the Copyright Board of Canada. In 2023 he was made a Member of the Order of Canada for his contributions to Canadian entertainment, and he co-founded the Songwriters Association of Canada.
