About Stephen
Stephen Cavanagh practices professional liability, insurance, and commercial litigation at Cavanagh LLP, with extensive experience advising both insurers and insureds on coverage issues and a number of reported cases in the field. He has acted as a mediator and arbitrator in civil disputes, principally in insurance and commercial law, and has served as counsel in disciplinary proceedings. He was a member of the Ontario Civil Rules Committee from 2007 to 2021 and served on subcommittees addressing the discount rate for future pecuniary damages, and in 2020 he joined the Civil Working Group of judges and practitioners from across the province. He has been named to The Best Lawyers in Canada in Insurance Law and Malpractice Law and was recognized by Best Lawyers as Ottawa's Insurance Law Lawyer of the Year in 2014, 2017, 2019, and 2024. He taught Civil Litigation for the Bar Admission Course and Insurance Law and Trial Advocacy at the University of Ottawa's law school, and in 2019 received the County of Carleton Law Association's Carleton Medal. He earned his LL.B. from Western University in 1978 and his B.A. (Hons.) from Carleton University in 1975, and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1980.
