Commercial disputes sit at the centre of Matthew Karabus's work, whether they're argued in a courtroom or in front of an arbitrator. As a partner in Gowling WLG's Toronto office, Karabus is regularly involved in fights over contracts, shareholder rights, banking relationships and commercial real estate. The practice also reaches administrative law and litigation involving government or regulated industries, along with disputes inside not-for-profit organizations.

Karabus was called to the Ontario bar in 2012 and holds an LLB from the University of Cape Town. Since then, the work has included counsel roles in numerous arbitrations and appearances at every level of court in Ontario. On the Superior Court of Justice's commercial list, Karabus advised Spass Inc. together with a co-applicant in Spass Inc. v Ko. Injunctions, fraud claims and enforcing judgments obtained abroad are a regular part of the mix.

Teaching is something Karabus keeps coming back to. Other lawyers learn advanced techniques for civil trials from Karabus through Osgoode Hall Professional Development, and the University of Windsor earlier brought Karabus in to teach legal remedies, focusing on injunctions and specific performance. The writing follows the same practical thread, with pieces on summary judgment in Ontario, auditor liability after the Livent litigation, and a Toronto Lawyers Association program on how to bring or oppose a summary judgment motion.
