About Sharon Chernyak

Sharon Chernyak works with clients who need to protect their intellectual property or enforce it, with a practice built around IP litigation and strategy in trademarks, patents and copyright. Chernyak is an associate in Gowling WLG's Toronto office and part of its Intellectual Property Group, and takes on work for large companies and individuals alike, with an approach shaped to each client.

Called to the Ontario bar in 2025, Chernyak earned a JD cum laude from the University of Ottawa in 2024, with a specialization in health law. Law school included research assistant roles at two campus centres: the Centre for Law, Technology, and Society and the Canadian Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Ethical Design Lab, where Chernyak was an AI + Society Technoship Fellow in first year. There was hands-on client work too, as a caseworker in the tenant division of the university's Community Legal Clinic from 2022 to 2023.

Science came first, though. Chernyak finished a Bachelor of Health Sciences summa cum laude at McMaster University in 2021 and, as an undergrad, pushed for health policy reform with the McMaster Autism Research Team. Clients can work with Chernyak in English, French or Russian. The associate has also co-written pieces on copyright in the influencer era and on Taylor Swift's use of trademark law against AI. Outside the classroom, Chernyak's free time went to reading, international card games and buying concert tickets, even if those shows had a way of getting cancelled.
