About Richard
Richard Halpern is Senior Counsel at Gluckstein Lawyers who represents injured people exclusively in medical negligence cases, with a particular focus on infants harmed around the time of birth. He has more than 30 years of experience and is a founding member of the Birth Injury Lawyers Alliance, a national group of lawyers who share strategies and develop best practices for representing children hurt during birth. Richard has written extensively on obstetrics, causes of newborn injury, and legal strategy, including a paper on proving causation in birth trauma litigation and a critique of obstetrical surveillance guidelines, and he has delivered more than 90 presentations to lawyers and health care providers. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto, his LL.B. from the University of Windsor, and a Master of Laws in Civil Litigation from Osgoode Hall Law School. Richard has handled hundreds of medical malpractice cases with settlements often exceeding $10 million and has appeared before the Superior Court of Ontario and the Ontario Court of Appeal. He received the Ontario Bar Association's Award for Distinguished Service in 2015, is a past president of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association, and sits on the Holland Group, which works to reform medical malpractice law and practice.
