About Rebecca Johnston

Rebecca Johnston handles complex intellectual property litigation, from claims under the Trademarks Act and the Copyright Act to claims for damages, and that work includes drug patent proceedings under the Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations. Johnston has appeared before the Federal Court and the Federal Court of Appeal as well as Ontario's Superior Court and Court of Appeal.

Not every file ends up in court. Clients also turn to Johnston for advice on patent listing, matters before the Patented Medicine Prices Review Board, copyright licensing and enforcement, and contract disputes. Johnston earned a JD at Dalhousie's Schulich School of Law, was called to the Ontario bar in 2017, and is now a partner in the Intellectual Property Group at Gowling WLG's Ottawa office.

Johnston holds an honours BSc in biochemistry from Carleton University and a master's in cellular and molecular medicine from the University of Ottawa, and has worked in biotechnology, clinical trials included. Johnston also co-authored two research papers on heart muscle cells, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and Molecular and Cellular Biology.

Closer to home, Johnston volunteers with a local minor hockey league and has given time to Pro Bono Ontario.
